Years ago there was a movie called “Field of Dreams” starring Kevin Costner. In the film a ghostly voice whispered on the wind, “Build it and they will come”. That’s a beautiful thought and ideal for Hollywood, but completely invalid on the net. There are thousands of web pages built in the hope that they (visitors) would come, that sales would be made and success would follow, but it was an empty dream. The question is why?

If you’ve built (or had someone build) a website, it might be filled with all the latest gizmos and gadgets, have stunning graphics and flash animation, but without in-bound links, no one will ever find your site and it’s likely your wonderful website will become a cyber ghost town. Link building is a crucial (but often misunderstood) part of search engine marketing.

What is a link?

An in-bound link can be thought of as one website saying something positive, giving a vote, (in most cases) about another website and creating a link to that site using HTML (or other programming languages); when this link is clicked, i.e. “click here to learn more”, the visitor is directed to the mentioned site.

An internal link (a link that stays within the say website) may direct a visitor to a particular category, product, image or article within the site. Link building (which is crucial to the success of any website) is the on-going task of finding other sites that will place a link leading back to your site, this can be done manually or some cases, by using automation.

Why Links Are Important
While the following is an oversimplification, one of the main ways to generate traffic is by being found in the major search engines; Google, Yahoo and Bing (not a definitive list but these three search engine have the largest market in the majority of countries around the globe). When your site is ranked well (typically when you are on page one) a person searching for what you have to offer is likely to click the link leading to your site; vital for traffic, sales and branding.

This naturally begs the question, how does one get on to page one of the major search engines. One powerful ingredient are in-bound (anchor text) links.

Linking Factoid: Anchor text is the words that are visible in a hyperlink. An example would be “Click To Visit”, in this instance “Click To Visit” is the anchor text, however the words could also be descriptive, i.e. “Link Building Company”.

The use of anchor text began in 1998 when some browsers implemented a “tooltip” that was visible before a link was clicked. When a website begins to have hundreds (possibly thousands) of in-bound (anchor text) links pointing to their site, the search engines begin to take notice and if done correctly (yes there is a wrong way), a particular website will begin to rise in the SERPs (search engine results page).

That said, there are three basic reasons to begin a link building campaign:

Number one, so the search engines can find you, without the SERPs (search engine results page), you’re fighting an uphill battle.

Number two works in conjunction with the above, the more contextual links pointing to your site, the higher your search engine ranking. Ranking = Traffic = Sales.

Number three is fairly logical; others will find your site by clicking on links (backlinks) that lead to your website. No matter your reason for being on the internet, whether it’s for business, fun or a combination of both, if you want your voice to be heard, link building is crucial as the major component of the search engine optimization puzzle.
